December 16

Religion:   Next week we will have our last Advent Prayer Service. After Mass on Wednesday the whole school will go to the gym to sing Christmas Carols. After Christmas break we will talk about the 12 Days of Christmas leading up the the Epiphany.
Writing: We will be starting a new unit after Christmas break on Fiction. The students will get the chance to use their imagination to create a story where anything is possible.
Math:  Unit Five will begin next week. This will focus on larger numbers and place value. They will be reading, writing, and ordering numbers to the millions.
Spelling: Week Twelve - sounds of oi & oy / plural endings to nouns. The spelling section of the website contains all of the weekly lists and the choice words in case your child misplaces their words.  You can also find a copy of LSCW if you need it. Our test for Week 12 will be on January 6.
Science/SS: We will be finishing up our unit on the "American Spirit" for social studies. Next we will be starting a new unit in science called Force, Motion and Simple Machines. Look for information to be coming home on Tuesday regarding important dates for materials, assignments and the completed project for the Invention Convention!

Comprehension: We are working on making inferences in reading. The third graders are asked to be detectives while they read so they can find clues. Students will. We will continue to meet with students in groups as well as individual conferences.

December 9

Religion:   We will have our Advent Prayer Service next Friday at 8:40. Mrs. Thornton's class is in charge of Mass on Wednesday. We will continue our mini unit on the Works of Mercy. On Friday we will go to the computer lab to make word clouds using words pertaining to the Works of Mercy.
Writing: Next week we will be finishing up our unit on personal narratives. We will work on editing our writing and turning it into a final draft. Each child will present his or her work to the class. Our next grammar lesson will be on verbs.
Math:  Unit Four will wrap up next Thursday. Monday and Tuesday are teaching days, Wednesday will be a review day, and Thursday is the test. Please continue to work on basic facts with your child. The basic facts for addition and subtraction should be mastered at this point. We will start learning more games to help memorize their multiplication facts.
Spelling: Week Eleven - sounds of ea in mean / head and syllables -cion,
-sion, -tion. The spelling section of the website contains all of the weekly lists and the choice words in case your child misplaces their words.  You can also find a copy of LSCW if you need it.
Science/SS: Students will be discovering and learning about 6 different themes that symbolize our "American Spirit" (Courage, Hard Work, Diversity, Liberty, Honor and Equality). Students will be using My Maps to find the location of their person/place that symbolizes a particular American Spirit. Students will also share their American Flags that contain information about their person/place.

Comprehension: We are working on making inferences in reading. The third graders are asked to be detectives while they read so they can find clues. Next week we will read the trade book Boundless Grace and will discuss how to describe the main character's personality.

December 2

Religion:   We will have our Advent Prayer Service next Wednesday at 2:50. The students will have the opportunity to participate in the sacrament of Reconciliation on Wednesday as well. We will do an examination of conscience on Tuesday during school to help prepare the students. Mass will be on Thursday next week due to the Immaculate Conception. On Friday we will start a mini unit on the Works of Mercy.
Writing: The students are continuing to work on their personal narratives. Next week we will focus on creating a strong lead as well as a strong conclusion to our piece. Our next grammar lesson will be a pronoun review.
Math:  Unit Four continues with multiplication and division. The students will use fact families and arrays to further their understanding of multiplication and division. They will also be learning multiplication baseball to help memorize the facts. This is an app they can download to play on iPads as well.
Spelling: Week Ten - vowel sounds of y and medial consonant blends and digraphs (ex: teacher). The spelling section of the website contains all of the weekly lists and the choice words in case your child misplaces their words.  You can also find a copy of LSCW if you need it.
Science/SS: Students will be discovering and learning about 6 different themes that symbolize our "American Spirit" (Courage, Hard Work, Diversity, Liberty, Honor and Equality). Students will be choosing one to go more in depth with and research a particular person or place the exemplifies that spirit. Be looking for a research notes sheet to be coming home on Wednesday to edit with your child.
