April 28

Religion:   Next week the third graders are in charge of the May Crowning Mass. Please join us to celebrate if possible:) Also, they will be asked to bring a flower for our vase to offer to Mary. The Paschal Mystery will be discusses as well as making sacrifices.
Writing: We have officially started our unit on Poetry. We will be looking at various poems to learn all about their characteristics. Our grammar lesson will be on Commas and Quotation Marks in Dialogue.
Math:   Unit Nine continues next week with multiplication and division. The students will be using factors, using division strategies, and learning a new multiplication algorithm called lattice multiplication. These multiplication strategies will probably be new to most families, so please use the Everyday Math website to see how these strategies work if needed.
Spelling: Week 27 - R Controlled Vowels / Multiple Affixes. The spelling section of the website contains all of the weekly lists and the choice words in case your child misplaces their words.  You can also find a copy of LSCW if you need it.
Science/SS: Rain Forest Unit - The students will be given a specific rain forest animal to research this week. They will then begin creating a research project folder to present to the rest of the class.
Comprehension: Next week we will be learning how to use context clues to determine the meaning of unknown words. We will be working on this over the next few weeks.

April 21

Religion:   Next week the kids will focus on the country of Cuba. Our mission for April will go to Caritas, which is a Catholic organization that works in many different countries to follow the mission of the Catholic church to help others. They have a branch in Cuba that has served the people there.
Writing: We have officially started our unit on Poetry. We will be looking at various poems to learn all about their characteristics. Our grammar lesson will be on Commas in Addresses.
Math:   Unit Nine continues next week with multiplication and division. The students will be using mental math strategies to multiply, exploring arrays, and learning the partial-products multiplication algorithm. These multiplication strategies will probably be new to most families, so please use the Everyday Math website to see how these strategies work if needed.

Science/SS: Rain Forest Unit - Students will starting learning more specifics about Rain Forests: Climate/Rainfall, locations around the world, the specific layers, and the animals that populate each.
Comprehension: We have finished reading the book Stone Fox. Talk to your children about the bittersweet ending. Next week we will wrap up this unit before moving on to learning about context clues.

April 14

Religion:   Easter will be the focus for next week. We will learn about the important events of Easter. On Friday we will be doing a prayer service in our classroom. Each child should bring a small rock with them for this.
Writing: We will be finishing our unit on Opinion Writing. We will be adding adjectives to our writing to make it interesting for our audience. Our grammar lesson will be on Contractions.
Math:   Unit Eight wraps up next week with a test on Wednesday, April 19. We will review on Tuesday, so look for the review to come home that night. On Thursday we will start our next unit which focuses on multiplication and division. It will cover 2-digit and 3-digit multiplication, so it will be easier to get through if your child has their basic multiplication facts down.

Science/SS: Rain Forest Unit - Students will begin learning about living things, different ecosystems and the classifications of animals.
Comprehension: We are nearing an end to Stone Fox. During this study, the children will be using many comprehension skills. They will be predicting, visualizing and making connections.

April 7

Religion:   Holy Week begins next week. We will be focused on what happened to Jesus on each of the days. The students will also be using the Bible to learn more about who else is important during Holy Week. On Friday the sixth graders will be presenting the Stations of the Cross to the rest of the school at 2:30.
Writing: We are continuing our unit on Opinion Writing. We will be using transition words to connect our opinions and reasons. Our grammar lesson will be on Writing Book Titles.
Math:   Unit Eight continues next week with fractions. We will be looking fractions that are greater than one. We will use the book, Picture Pie, to find examples of how to create different animals using fraction pieces. They will then have to find the improper fraction and mixed number value of their animal. The test over fractions is scheduled for Wednesday, April 19.
Spelling: Week 24 - R Controlled Vowels (air, ar, are)/ Suffixes (-ful, -less, -like). The spelling section of the website contains all of the weekly lists and the choice words in case your child misplaces their words.  You can also find a copy of LSCW if you need it.
Science/SS: PLANT Unit - Students will be needing seeds from a fruit for an observation with homework that will be due on Tuesday. Students will be learning more about seed dispersal and the life cycle of a plant.
