May 17


Religion:  Next week we will be creating self-portraits. They will be writing on the back of each of their classmates to let them all know what they appreciate about each other.


Writing: This week we focused on adverbs and adjectives with our mentor sentences. We also wrote about the part of ourselves that we liked the best. Next week we will present these "Best Part of Me" pieces.
Math:  We have a couple more lessons on data and probability next week. That will wrap up math for the year!
Spelling: NO SPELLING NEXT WEEK

Look for your child's rain forest animal research file folder to be coming home! Students will finish up science learning about the Integumentary System and how important it is for us to take care of our skin, nails and teeth!
Comprehension: Teachers are working with students individually this week to see each child's growth.

May 13

Religion:  
Next week the students will study the sacraments of initiation. We will also discuss the Ascension and Pentecost.








Writing: We focused on Interjections with our Mentor Sentence. We finished our author reports this week. We will present them to the class and then begin a story which focuses on the elements of a story.




Math:  We finished our Unit 9 with a test on Thursday. Next week we will begin looking at data and probability. We will end our year with this short unit.

Comprehension: The students are busy identifying the main idea of a passage. They are forced to think about why authors write each of their pieces.

May 3

Religion:  
The students did an AMAZING job leading the school at mass on Wednesday. We are VERY proud of their efforts. Next week the students will focus on the Glorious Mysteries. We will use the Bible to look up and read about these mysteries.








Writing: This week worked on our author research project. The students used books and iPads to find information about their author. We will be compiling our findings into a report next week.





Math:   Unit 9 will wrap up next week with a test on Thursday, May 9. We only have THREE timed tests left until the end of the school year. Please make sure your child is practicing every evening. We want the students to master these basic facts.

Be looking for this research notes sheet to come home next week for editing! Students will begin creating their rain forest information folder which they will present to the class the following week.

Comprehension: The students continued to practice the strategies of using a dictionary and context clues to determine the meaning of unknown words. Our next unit will focus on determining the importance of the texts we are reading.

April 26

Religion:  Next week we will be preparing for the May Crowning Mass. All of the third grade is in charge of this mass. The students are also asked to bring in a flower for the procession of mass to present to Mary. Thursday and Friday we will be talking the Paschal Mystery and making sacrifices.









Writing: This week we continued writing nonfiction paragraphs. We also began a research project where each student learned about a specific author's life. We will take our research and write a biography using our new knowledge about paragraphs.






Math:   Unit 9 continues next week. The focus remains on multiplication and division. Please continue to have your child practice for the timed tests for multiplication and division as the students are encouraged to get the basic facts memorized. They will be learning different strategies for multi-digit multiplication problems.

Students will be assigned an animal to research in depth for our file folder project. Blank Park Zoo will visit us and will be bringing some animals that could be found in a rain forest on Friday, May 3rd.

Comprehension: Last week the students learned how to use a dictionary to determine the meaning of an unknown word. This week the students practiced using context clues to help understand the meaning of unfamiliar words.

April 19

Religion:  The Stations of the Cross were led by the 6th graders today. Next week we will focus on Easter and do an activity with Bible passages. On Friday the students will be participating in a prayer service in each of our rooms. They will need to bring a rock to school for that by Friday.



Writing: This week we finished our unit on persuasive writing. We also started to work on writing nonfiction paragraphs. The students should understand that each paragraph contains a topic sentence and supporting sentences.

Religion:  The students have completed their Stations of the Cross booklet! Next week we will be talking about the special days during Holy Week. On Friday afternoon the 6th graders will be leading us in the Stations of the Cross in the church at 2:30.
Writing: Next week we will finish up our unit on persuasive writing. We will then turn our attention to writing topic sentences. The students will learn how to identify the main idea of each paragraph as well how to write a topic sentence.

April 5

Religion:  Next week we will be wrapping up our Stations of the Cross booklet. The students will also get a chance to participate in the sacrament of Reconciliation on Friday.
Writing: Next week we will continue to work on writing strong opinion pieces. We will focus on using the perfect adjectives, and we will also work on creating strong conclusions.
Math:  Unit 8 will be wrapping up next week. We will have one more lesson on Tuesday, a review on Wednesday, and the test for Unit 8 will be on Thursday, April 11. On Friday the students will participate in another STEM activity.

Science/SS: Students will continue to learn about plants. Students will discover that plants have Life Cycles and can make their own food in a process called Photosynthesis.

March 29

Religion:  We have continued our focus on the Lenten season. The students are working on a Stations of the Cross booklet. Each station includes a description, activity, and prayer for the students to complete. Next week our prayer service will on be Thursday at 8:40.
Writing: This week we continued to work on opinion pieces. We worked on stating our opinion and then writing supporting sentences. The third graders understand that opinions may vary. They are discovering how to use their words to convince others of their thoughts.
Math:  Unit 8 started up this week. Our focus is on fractions. The concepts that will be reviewed and introduced are using the number line to understand fractions, equivalent fractions, comparing fractions, and fractions greater than one. The test for Unit 8 will be on Thursday, April 11th.
Spelling: Week 24 R-Controlled Vowels (ar, air, are) / Suffixes (less, ful, like)

Science/SS: Students will continue observing their "planted seed" in class. They will also learn about: Needs and Parts of Plants, Seeds, and a Plant's Life Cycle.
Comprehension: We are working on Reader's Theater. The students are getting a lot of practice with fluency for this unit. They are also working on expression and intonation.

Religion:  Third grade will be in charge of our Lenten Prayer Service on Tuesday, March 26 at 8:40. The students will also continue working on their Stations of the Cross booklet. They will also be taking some time to make decorations for the Sunsational Seniors next meeting in March.
Writing: This week we focused on adding adjectives with our Mentor Sentence. We started a unit over opinion pieces. Students will practice trying to convince their reader to change their mind about a topic.
Math:  Unit 8 starts after Spring Break. Our focus will be on fractions. The concepts that will be reviewed and introduced are using the number line to understand fractions, equivalent fractions, comparing fractions, and fractions greater than one.
Spelling: Week 23 R-Controlled Vowels (eer, ear) / Suffixes (able, ly, ward)

Science/SS: Students will have a review day for our Moon Test on Monday, March 25th. Our Moon unit test will be on Tuesday, March 26th. We will start our plant unit on Thursday, March 28th.
Comprehension: After spring break we will start our Reader's Theater unit. Each child will be assigned a part and they will act out their part using only their voice. This unit focuses on fluency and expression.
