January 26

Religion:  Next week we will be celebrating Catholic Schools Week. Here is the schedule for the week:
Monday, January 29: Celebrating Your Community-Wear a shirt representing a community/program you have been involved in (team, Girl Scouts, Battle of the Books, Choro, etc) and uniform pants. Tuesday, January 30: Celebrating Your Students- Spirit Wear with your choice of bottoms. Wednesday, January 31: 11:20 Dismissal Celebrating The Nation-Dress Up for Jesus! Thursday, February 1: Celebrating Vocations- Wear school appropriate clothing that represents what you want to be when you grow up. Friday, February 2: Celebrating Faculty, Staff and Volunteers- Jeans/Athletic Wear
Writing: This week we focused on Proper Nouns with our Mentor Sentence. The students are continuing to do a great job changing the sentences and creating similar sentences.
Next week we will be editing and revising our fiction drafts. We will try to use strong verbs and adverbs in our writing.
Math:  Our next unit will focus on geometry. The vocabulary we will focus on for next week will be quadrangles and polygons. The students will be expected to know the characteristics of each type we review. They will need to give the most specific name they can for the polygons.

Spelling: Week 16 Sounds of oo (moon & took) / Verb Endings - s, es, ed, ing

Science/SS: Students will begin work on their presentation posters for their Inventions. Please join us for the Invention Convention on Friday, February 2 from 12:15-1:00.
Comprehension: We are continuing to work on the comprehension strategy of wondering and questioning. We are writing down our thoughts as we read, and we are reading to see if our predictions actual happen in our stories.

January 19

Religion:  Next week we will discuss parables and how to find symbols in them to learn about God's kingdom. The students will read the parables and also watch short videos depicting them.
Writing: This week we focused on adjectives with our Mentor Sentence. The students are doing a great job changing the sentences and creating similar sentences.

We are continuing to study different pieces of fiction writing. We are drafting our own fiction stories as well.
Math:  Our next unit will focus on geometry. There will be a lot of vocabulary to review and learn. This is a fun unit with lots of hands-on activities to help the students understand the concepts. We will start with lines, line segments, rays, angles, parallel and intersecting lines and triangles.

Science/SS: Students will be doing a hands on observation with the forces at work on bridges and will attempt to construct a paper bridge. They will discover just how strong it is by putting as many pennies on it that they can! A reminder that the Blank Poster Board and edited Planning Sheet are due on Thursday, January 25. Invention Convention is Friday, February 2 from 12:15-1:00.
Comprehension: We are continuing to work on the comprehension strategy of wondering and questioning. Next week we will write a letter explaining how we are using this strategy while we read our own books.

January 12

Religion:  Because of the snow day, we will be moving our discussion and activity about the Baptism of Jesus to next week. We will continue with our classroom meetings as well.
Writing: We are starting to use a program called Mentor Sentences to help the students learn about sentence structure and building their own sentences correctly. Look in their take home folders to see what this program is all about.

We are continuing to study different pieces of fiction writing. We are drafting our own fiction stories as well.
Math:  We will finish up our work with larger numbers in Unit 5. We will have one more lesson on Tuesday, a review on Wednesday and then the test will be on Thursday. Thank you so much for bringing in materials to help with our STEAM activities!

Science/SS: We are starting our forces, motion, and simple machines unit. The kids will participating in many hands on activities throughout the unit! This week we will be looking more in depth at these simple machines: This week we will be learning more about the wedge, pulley and wheel and axle. Blank Poster Board and edited Planning Sheet due on Thursday, January 25. Invention Convention is Friday, February 2 from 12:15-1:00.
Comprehension: We are continuing to work on the comprehension strategy of wondering and questioning. We will practice describing our thoughts before, during and after we read.

January 5

Religion:  Next week we will be focused on the Epiphany and the Baptism of the Lord. We will also see how the sacrament of Baptism is rooted in the Bible.
Writing: This week we started working on Fiction. We read the book Tacky the Penguin and discussed the characteristics of a fictional story. We will continue to work with studying more types of fiction as well as drafting fiction next week.
Math:  We will continue working with larger numbers in Unit 5. There will be some introduction of decimals and fractions as well. The students will be expected to know their place value to the millions as well as low as the hundredths place. Thank you in advance for bringing in materials to help with our STEAM activities!
