February 23

Religion:  We have started our focus on the Lenten season. The students are working on a Stations of the Cross booklet. Each station includes a description, activity and prayer for the students to complete. Each Monday the whole school is participating in a prayer service for Lent. The third graders will be in charge of the one on March 18 at 9:10 in the Church.

Writing: This week we focused on conjunctions our Mentor Sentence. We finished our functional writing unit. Next week we will begin our Opinion Unit.
Math:  Unit 7 started this week with a focus on multiplication and division. The students will be using parentheses to form more complex number sentences. They will also be practicing extended facts for multiplication and division.
Spelling: Week 19 Vowel Digraphs / Compound Words
The spelling section of the website contains all of the weekly lists and the choice words in case your child misplaces their words.  You can also find a copy of LSCW if you need it.
Science/SS: Students will begin a new unit in science on our solar system and the moon. We will read an informational book about the planets and create postcards to display new knowledge of the different planets.
Comprehension: We are working on determining importance from various pieces. We are looking at our own reading and trying to figure out the author's purpose.

February 9

Religion:  We will continue our focus on Lent next week. The kids will be able to participate at Mass on Ash Wednesday. Our Valentine's Day party will be on Tuesday instead of February 14. Also, after our break, the students will be starting a project on the Stations of the Cross.
Writing: This week we focused on compound sentences with our Mentor Sentence. We presented our fiction stories this week, and started our next unit on functional writing.
Math:  Unit 6 will be coming to an end on Wednesday, February 14 with our test. After conferences we will be starting Unit 7 which focuses on multiplication and division.

Science/SS: Students will begin work on creating a Lapbook about their inventor. They will also create a short video clip about some of the important information about him/her.
Comprehension: We are working on determining importance from various pieces. We are asking ourselves why the author wrote each piece.

February 2

Religion:  Next week we will be starting to focus on angels and Lent. We will use the Bible to find out how angels have appeared to people for various reasons. We will also start looking at the season of Lent.
Writing: This week we focused on compound sentences with our Mentor Sentence. We presented our fiction stories this week, and started our next unit on functional writing.
Math:  Our next unit will focus on geometry. The vocabulary we will focus on for next week will be angles, symmetry and polyhedrons. The students will be creating different polyhedrons and solid figures.
