March 30

Religion:  The Stations of the Cross were led by the 6th graders today. Next week we will focus on Easter and do an activity with Bible passages. On Friday the students will be participating in a prayer service in each of our rooms. They will need to bring a rock to school for that by Friday.

Writing: This week we focused on possessive nouns with our Mentor Sentence. We presented our opinion pieces to the class. Next week we will study the structure of a sentence. The students will be able to identify a topic sentence and supporting sentences.
Math:  Unit 8 will be wrapping up next week. We will have one more lesson on Tuesday, no math on Wednesday due to practice for the music program, a review on Thursday and the test for Unit 8 will be on Friday, April 6th.
Spelling: Week 22 R-Controlled Vowels (eer, ear) / Prefixes (mis, dis, im, un)
The spelling section of the website contains all of the weekly lists and the choice words in case your child misplaces their words.  You can also find a copy of LSCW if you need it.
Science/SS: Students will be learning about seeds this week. Students will need a piece of fruit for homework completion on Tuesday/Wednesday. On Thursday we will be observing all the different seeds and using them to complete a writing activity.
Comprehension: We have read the eight chapters in Stone Fox. Next week will finish the book, and we will discuss its bittersweet ending.

March 23

Religion:  The students have completed their Stations of the Cross booklet! Next week we will be talking about the special days during Holy Week. On Friday afternoon the 6th graders will be leading us in the Stations of the Cross in the church at 2:30. Mission Day will be on Thursday next week because of Stations. That means the Stewardship Sheet will also be due on Thursday.

Writing: This week we focused on comparative and superlative adjectives with our Mentor Sentence. We also continued to work on our opinion pieces. We are focusing on the conclusion of our work.
Math:  Unit 8 started up this week. Our focus is on fractions. The concepts that will be reviewed and introduced are using the number line to understand fractions, equivalent fractions, comparing fractions, and fractions greater than one. The test for Unit 8 will be on Thursday, April 5th.

Science/SS: The test over our Space Unit will be on Monday. The kids reviewed on Friday and should be bringing home their study guide. Our next unit will focus on plants.
Comprehension: We have read the first four chapters of Stone Fox. We have worked on making connections and visualizing the words we read. Next week we will continue to work on this class book and more comprehension strategies.

March 2

Religion:  We have continued our focus on the Lenten season. The students are working on a Stations of the Cross booklet. Each station includes a description, activity and prayer for the students to complete. Each Monday the whole school is participating in a prayer service for Lent. The third graders will be in charge of the one on March 18 at 9:10 in the Church.

Writing: This week we focused on vivid verbs with our Mentor Sentence. We also started our opinion unit. We are working on stating our opinion and then writing down reasons to support our thoughts.
Math:  Unit 7 continued this week with a focus on multiplication and division. The students will be using parentheses to form more complex number sentences. They will also be practicing extended facts for multiplication and division. The test for this unit will be on Wednesday, March 7 before Spring Break.

Science/SS: Students will learn about the Earth's rotation and what that causes here on Earth. Students will also learn about Earth's revolution and how our seasons are determined.
Comprehension: This week we finished our unit on Determining Importance. After spring break we will begin a class book, Stone Fox. We will use a myriad of comprehension strategies while working on this text.
