April 26

Religion:  Next week we will be preparing for the May Crowning Mass. All of the third grade is in charge of this mass. The students are also asked to bring in a flower for the procession of mass to present to Mary. Thursday and Friday we will be talking the Paschal Mystery and making sacrifices.









Writing: This week we continued writing nonfiction paragraphs. We also began a research project where each student learned about a specific author's life. We will take our research and write a biography using our new knowledge about paragraphs.






Math:   Unit 9 continues next week. The focus remains on multiplication and division. Please continue to have your child practice for the timed tests for multiplication and division as the students are encouraged to get the basic facts memorized. They will be learning different strategies for multi-digit multiplication problems.

Image result for rainforest animalsScience/SS: Students will be learning about the layers and products of the rain forest. Students will be assigned an animal to research in depth for our file folder project. Blank Park Zoo will visit us and will be bringing some animals that could be found in a rain forest on Friday, May 3rd.

Comprehension: Last week the students learned how to use a dictionary to determine the meaning of an unknown word. This week the students practiced using context clues to help understand the meaning of unfamiliar words.

April 19

Religion:  The Stations of the Cross were led by the 6th graders today. Next week we will focus on Easter and do an activity with Bible passages. On Friday the students will be participating in a prayer service in each of our rooms. They will need to bring a rock to school for that by Friday.



Writing: This week we finished our unit on persuasive writing. We also started to work on writing nonfiction paragraphs. The students should understand that each paragraph contains a topic sentence and supporting sentences.

Comprehension: This week the students learned how to utilize a dictionary when they come across an unknown word. Next week we will focus on how to use context clues to determine the meaning.

April 12

Religion:  The students have completed their Stations of the Cross booklet! Next week we will be talking about the special days during Holy Week. On Friday afternoon the 6th graders will be leading us in the Stations of the Cross in the church at 2:30.
Writing: Next week we will finish up our unit on persuasive writing. We will then turn our attention to writing topic sentences. The students will learn how to identify the main idea of each paragraph as well how to write a topic sentence.
Math:  Unit 9 starts next week. It will focus on multiplication and division. The students are encouraged to get the basic facts memorized. They will be learning different strategies for multi-digit multiplication problems.

Science/SS: Plant test on Monday, April 15. We will begin our science unit on the rain forest. We will be learning about: Where Living Things are Found, Forest Ecosystems, and Categorizing Animals.
Comprehension: This week we finished our Reader's Theater and presented the plays to second grade. Next week will begin to look at using the dictionary to help us determine the meaning of unknown words.

April 5

Religion:  Next week we will be wrapping up our Stations of the Cross booklet. The students will also get a chance to participate in the sacrament of Reconciliation on Friday.
Writing: Next week we will continue to work on writing strong opinion pieces. We will focus on using the perfect adjectives, and we will also work on creating strong conclusions.
Math:  Unit 8 will be wrapping up next week. We will have one more lesson on Tuesday, a review on Wednesday, and the test for Unit 8 will be on Thursday, April 11. On Friday the students will participate in another STEM activity.

Science/SS: Students will continue to learn about plants. Students will discover that plants have Life Cycles and can make their own food in a process called Photosynthesis.
Comprehension: Next week we will conclude our Reader's Theater unit. We will present our plays to the second graders.

March 29

Religion:  We have continued our focus on the Lenten season. The students are working on a Stations of the Cross booklet. Each station includes a description, activity, and prayer for the students to complete. Next week our prayer service will on be Thursday at 8:40.
Writing: This week we continued to work on opinion pieces. We worked on stating our opinion and then writing supporting sentences. The third graders understand that opinions may vary. They are discovering how to use their words to convince others of their thoughts.
Math:  Unit 8 started up this week. Our focus is on fractions. The concepts that will be reviewed and introduced are using the number line to understand fractions, equivalent fractions, comparing fractions, and fractions greater than one. The test for Unit 8 will be on Thursday, April 11th.
Spelling: Week 24 R-Controlled Vowels (ar, air, are) / Suffixes (less, ful, like)

Science/SS: Students will continue observing their "planted seed" in class. They will also learn about: Needs and Parts of Plants, Seeds, and a Plant's Life Cycle.
Comprehension: We are working on Reader's Theater. The students are getting a lot of practice with fluency for this unit. They are also working on expression and intonation.
