November 30

Religion:  We will begin having our Advent prayer services next week. The first one will be on Tuesday, December 4 at 2:55. Also, Mrs. Thornton's class in in charge on Mass on Wednesday. The students will be focused on Mary on Thursday and Friday to prepare for the Immaculate Conception.
Writing: Grammar Lesson - Similes
We will finish our unit on personal narratives by presenting our writing to the class. Then we will begin a special project that will be presented to you soon.
Math:   Your child has multiplication/division fact triangle to study. They have learned a lot of different strategies to help with understanding multiplication and division as well as strategies to help them memorize their facts. They will be doing more explorations with arrays next week, finding distances, and finding areas of rectangles using multiplication.
Spelling: Week 11 Sounds of EA (in mean and head) & Syllables -cion, -sion, -tion

Science/SS: Students will continue with the unit entitled The American Spirit. Students have been researching a person or place that has helped shape and link us together as Americans today. The key ideals of Liberty, Equality, Courage, Hard Work, Diversity and Honor will be a common thread to all of these people and places. Students will present their information to the class in the form of an American flag.
Comprehension: We will continue our unit on making inferences. We will practice being detectives and look for clues within passages. We will then apply this to our own reading.

November 15

Religion:  Our focus will be on the Works of Mercy the next couple of weeks. They will be using what they learn to create a word cloud in the computer lab.
Writing: Grammar Lesson - Diagramming Sentences with Adjectives
Next week the third graders will continue working on our Personal Narratives unit. We will be discussing strong openings and closings. We will then edit our work and create a final draft to share with the class.
Math:   The fourth unit will start November 26 and will focus on multiplication and division. Some of the skills the students will focus on will be multiples of equal groups, understanding and creating arrays, equal shares and equal groups, and division ties to multiplication with fact families. We will be using a multiplication/division chart to help them find the basic facts. Our goal is that they will master/memorize some of the the "easier" facts this unit.

Next week the third graders will continue working on our Personal Narratives unit. We will be listening to examples of personal narratives that other children have written. We will write about times when we have persevered and discuss using temporal words (next, then, finally).
Math:   Our third unit will be wrapping up next week with a test on Wednesday. They will review on Tuesday. The fourth unit will focus on multiplication and division.

Religion:  The students will be learning about how all life is important to us. We will focus on the books, If I Only Had a Green Nose and Horton Hears a Who to have a discussion about this topic.
Writing: Grammar Lesson - Possessive Nouns
Next week the third graders will continue working on our Personal Narratives unit. We will be listening to many examples of personal narratives, and we will then write about some of our own special memories. We will spend some time writing about situations where we've faced challenges, and we will explain how we persevered.
Math:   Our third unit continues next week with measurement. The students will focus on creating line plots, exploring perimeter and area, and then applying that knowledge with measurements.. There is a lot of vocabulary in this unit for your child to recall.
Spelling: Week 8 Long O (Co, oa, ow) & Consonant Digraphs ph & gh

Science/SS: Students will begin a short government unit. The students will learn about the levels and branches of government.
Comprehension: We will continue to work on visualizing next week. We will read the book Aunt Flossie's Hats and discuss the pictures that we created in our minds. Then we will notice and write down words that helped us visualize in our own reading books.

October 26

Religion:  The students were assigned a saint to research. They went to the computer lab to find a picture of their saint and started research this week. On Tuesday they will be typing their information onto a slide. In technology class they will learn how to use the different features of Google Slides. They will be able to work on the slide at home using their email address to access their drive. On Friday we will be sharing their slides with the class.
Writing: Grammar Lesson - Comparative and Superlative Adjectives
Next week the third graders will begin a unit on Personal Narratives. We will be listening to many examples of personal narratives, and we will then write about some of our own special memories.
Math:   Our third unit starts next week with measurement. The students will focus on measuring with a ruler, standard linear measures and perimeter. There is a lot of vocabulary in this unit for your child to recall.
Spelling: Week 7 Long I (Cie, Cy, CCy, igh) & Final Consonant Digraphs ck, ng, nk

Science/SS: Students will review matter content and test will be on Tuesday, October 30. They will do a fun activity on Thursday to wrap up the unit! We will start a Government Unit on Friday.
Comprehension: We will continue to work on visualizing next week. We will read the book The Spooky Tail of Prewitt Peacock and discuss the pictures that we created in our minds. Then we will notice and write down words that helped us visualize in our own reading books.

The final project will be a google slide they create using google classroom. They will be able to work on the slide at home using their email address to access their drive.
Writing: We have officially completed our units on the Writing Process. The third graders will begin a unit on Personal Narratives after Iowa Assessments are finished.
Math:   We will not have any lessons next week due to Iowa Assessments. Unit Three will focus on linear measures and area.

October 5

Religion:    We will continue with the Rosary and our focus on the Joyful Mysteries. Third grade is in charge of the Rosary on Tuesday, October 16 at 9:00. We will also be talking about using our growth mindset because Jesus doesn't expect us to be perfect. After conference week we will be getting some things ready for Grandparent's Day.
Writing: Next week our grammar lesson will be over Descriptive or Vivid Verbs. We will finish editing and revising. We will also be making our first final draft and present those to the class.
Math:   We will be continuing our unit on addition and subtraction. The test for this will be on Thursday, October 18. Please continue to review the basic addition and subtraction facts with your third grader.
Spelling: Week Six - Long e (ei & ie)) & Consonant Digraphs (ch, sh, tch, th, wh)

Science/SS: Students will continuing exploring the concept of matter. Students will be able to identify the different states of matter, the melting properties of matter and the physical changes that can occur with matter.
Comprehension: In the next week and a half we will have all of our centers in place for guided reading. This includes listening, partner, writing and word work. Students are still focusing on making connections. They will be writing a letter to explain their connections.
